A commitment to healthy living needs a little support from great wellbeing products. But, with so many options on the market, finding knowledgeable retail staff who will offer good advice is critical. We have rounded up four stand-out businesses in Malta for diet, exercise and supplements. Read on for Mini Malta’s favourite places to start a healthier lifestyle.
Casa Natura
Casa Natura, hidden down a quiet street in Sliema, truly is a treasure trove of everything you need for a healthy lifestyle. Jam-packed with food, supplements and lifestyle products, the shop stocks some of the best brands available, including Weleda, Solgar and Ecover. A really handy place to pick up tofu and tempeh if you cutting out meat, they have an enormous selection of free-from products if you are concerned about allergies, and – with a large range of organic foods – you’ll also be impressed if you’re simply trying to cut out some of the nasties. Casa Natura has been in Sliema for 20 years and the staff are extremely knowledgable and very friendly. It’s worth remembering that they tend to shut over lunch, so do double-check their opening hours so you don’t venture out for nothing. But – during their opening hours – this is a trip worth making if you are looking for great quality products from an independent retailer with a love for healthy living.

Holland and Barrett
With stores across the island, and stocking a simply enormous range of product lines and brands, Holland & Barrett is unquestionably a retailer that springs to mind when it comes to healthy living in Malta. At Mini Malta, we regularly pop in to their huge Sliema store for the large pots of nut butters that are often on sale. But, even at the regular price point, they work out as significantly cheaper than almost all supermarket alternatives. The great news is it doesn’t just stop with peanut butter. Their bulk deals on a wide range of health foods including grains and dried fruit are a really smart way to shop for what can often be expensive types of food in Malta. Known in the UK for their wide range of supplements, Malta’s branches are impressively stocked and often offer multi-buy deals. Without a doubt, Holland & Barrett is worth a look for your healthy living needs and, with them now offering online shopping, it couldn’t be easier to find what you are looking for.

Leanne Bartolo
For some of us, working out and exercising can be akin to pulling teeth. Not if your personal trainer is Leanne Bartolo! Leanne is one of Malta’s leading fitness instructors and personal trainers, the owner of Warehouse Fitness Studio, and the WFF European Bikini Pro Champion of 2018 and 2019. She knows what she’s talking about when it comes to getting fit.
A psychology graduate and previously a primary school teacher, Leanne’s way of working out with clients is second-to-none. Her infectiously bubbly outlook, font of knowledge in fitness and nutrition, and genuinely inspiring personality have been a godsend to many, especially during the Covid-19 lockdown. As soon as the pandemic hit, Leanne launched a series of online hour-long workout sessions for free – which hundreds of people latched onto, keeping them fit and healthy as the crisis wore on, while providing a welcome distraction from the lockdown blues.
Now things are slowly coming back to normal the Warehouse Fitness Studio has reopened, with Leanne leading several indoor and outdoor sessions including some beach sessions. At the same time, given the current situation, some online Zoom sessions are carrying on for those who still wish to take precautions – so you have no excuse really. Continue to keep fit with Leanne as summer rolls on.

Dr Juice
With branches across the island and a flagship restaurant in Gzira, Dr Juice is something of a phenomenon in Malta. And rightly so because the branding, the experience and – most importantly – the juice from this great company are all outstanding. Launched over 10 years ago, Dr Juice’s secret is its constantly evolving menu and excellent customer service. It is well worth checking out their app and loyalty scheme if you become as addicted as we are, and their sustainability policy is really impressive (although we would like to know more about where and how they dispose of their single-use packaging). We absolutely love the Mango Mania, a long-standing part of its line-up, as it more or less tastes like ice cream. As such, it is a delicious treat for a tired mum but also a really healthy and delicious way to spoil a child who is hot and bothered after a morning trailing around the shops. There are plenty of other winners on their menu, including the fantastic breakfast alternatives using plenty of protein and superfoods. At the moment, the Mini Malta team are obsessed with the Chilli Cooler as it really is the perfect way to cool down in the heat… with a bit of a kick! Put simply, Dr Juice makes healthy eating that little bit easier and more enjoyable – and we are going to raise a glass to that.
